« continuity »
In our shared canon, Tahla and her wife Glowing Ember (Em) are both Warriors of Light. They travel and fight together, and are both recognized as Warriors of Light by all and sundry.Their shared journey follows the same steps as XIV canon, except that there are two Warriors, not just one.During the events of Shadowbringers, Tahla and Em share the burden of Light taken from the Lightwardens. As a result, the effects on each of them are somewhat lessened, but they would still have succumbed to the Light in the end had things not turned out as they did.
« history »
Tahla was born and raised in a merchant caravan out of Ul'dah, the Farfeather Concern. Her mother, Rhela Amariyo, was a caravan guard and a skilled archer. Tahla never knew her father, who was a few-nights stand somewhere along the caravan’s trade route. (According to Rhela, he had beautiful eyes.)Since she and her mother always traveled with the caravan, she spent most of her childhood on the road, only staying in one place for a month or two at most. The traders and other guards were like a family to each other, and Tahla was no exception. Her mother taught her the basics of archery, and others in the caravan taught her bits and pieces of both tradecraft and fieldcraft. As Tahla grew, she became a jack-of-all-trades, knowing a great deal but with no mastery of any one thing. She stayed with the caravan when she came of age, seeing no reason to change her life when what she was doing worked so well. The caravan’s owners were only too happy to offer her a contract of her own. When the Garleans began to threaten Eorzea, it didn’t affect Tahla’s life very much at first; all that really happened was that the caravan route shifted a bit. It wasn’t until they failed to make the usual annual trip to Ala Mhigo that Tahla truly understood the magnitude of what was happening. Places they’d visited regularly for years fell off their itinerary, and the red moon grew larger and larger in the sky.At last, the owners of the Farfeather Concern decided that trade had become too risky and recalled the entire caravan to Ul'dah, with plans to remain until hostilities died down. Compared to the freedom of the open road, the city felt claustrophobic, especially without a specific departure date. The caravan guards were pressed into Ul'dah’s service as the Garleans redoubled their efforts and Dalamud came ever closer. Tahla was assigned to back up the Brass Blades in maintaining order within the city walls.Rhela and the other veteran guards went to Carteneau and did not return. After the Calamity, Tahla renounced her long-held honoring of Menphina. The goddess of the moon could no longer be trusted, not when Dalamud had come crashing down on them. Instead, Tahla pledged herself to Oschon and left Ul'dah, wandering Eorzea in the Calamity’s aftermath. The Farfeather Concern was in shambles, and with her mother and many others dead or missing, Tahla saw no reason to remain. For five years she followed Oschon’s calling, helping with rebuilding efforts where she could and trying to put together a life of her own now that she could no longer follow a familiar path. At last, Tahla decided to formally enter the Archer’s Guild and hone her abilities, honoring both her mother and her heritage as a Keeper of the Moon. She headed for Gridania on a chocobo-drawn wagon, never dreaming that she was about to begin the greatest adventure of her life.
« ancient history »
[shadowbringers spoilers]In the long-ago days of Amaurot, Tahla and Em knew each other well, and eventually became lovers. Em served on the Convocation of Fourteen as Azem, the Traveler, with her ancient name being Melete.Tahla did not hold such an illustrious role, but was one of Azem's stars, always at the Traveler's side.Tahla's ancient name was Thaleia, sometimes referred to as the Storyteller. Thaleia accompanied Azem on her journeys and went to great pains to chronicle what they encountered and observed together. While Thaleia was not a member of the Convocation, she nevertheless had a memory crystal made for her by Emet-Selch, etched with the constellation Lyra.

« personality »
determined, wily, loyal

A displaced daughter of Ala Mhigo, Distant Threnody (Thren) was brought up a refugee on the edge of poverty. Thren doesn't trust easily; she is always looking for the 'catch' whenever anything good happens or is offered to her. Her reaction to most threats is to fight, physically if possible, but with words if no other avenue is available. Thren has a great deal of pride in her people, and a keen sense of the injustice dealt to them. The chip on her shoulder is more like a mountain.

« history »
Thren's mother (Blazing Dawn) and father (Steadfast Peak) were Ala Mhigan. After the city-state fell, both of them discarded their former lives and devoted themselves to the Resistance, where they met each other. Over the course of several years, they fell in love. After a failed mission that put Steadfast Peak in the infirmary for two months, Blazing Dawn realized she was pregnant. This revelation changed everything. The life of the Resistance was no place for an infant, and the pair decided to withdraw from active duty for the time being. With the help of the Resistance, they made their way through the construction that would later be Baelsar's Wall and into first Gridania, then Ul'dah and Little Ala Mhigo.Their daughter was born in Little Ala Mhigo, and named Distant Threnody - a song of mourning for their far-off home. When Thren was two, Steadfast Peak rejoined the Resistance, though he returned to visit twice each year (at great personal risk). Blazing Dawn stayed with Thren. The Hellsguard grew up with the other younglings of Little Ala Mhigo, a rough-and-tumble group that learned early what outsiders thought of them - ruffians, lazy, good-for-nothing. Thren became suspicious, guarded, and increasingly bitter about her lot in life, though she never blamed her parents or the other Ala Mhigans. The blame instead landed squarely on the Ul'dahns and others who found the refugees easy targets for their cruelty. When Thren was six, her mother became pregnant again after one of Steadfast Peak's visits. Thren looked forward to the birth of her new sibling, but the gods were once again cruel - the child was positioned badly in the womb, and the ensuing labor was excruciating. When the baby was at last born, her skin was blue from oxygen deprivation, but she was alive - barely.Blazing Dawn died shortly after, but not before telling Thren that she was dearly loved, and to take care of her sister. Thus, Thren grew up tending to her sister, Gentle Sunrise - not alone, of course. The community rallied around the girls. Thren was fiercely protective of Gentle Sunrise, especially once it became apparent that the deprivation suffered during her birth had permanently left Gentle Sunrise with the mental ability of a young child. Still, Gentle Sunrise was happy, and Thren was her constant companion.Steadfast Peak visited as often as he could, despite the risk. He stopped visiting when Thren was 16, and Thren is unsure as to what became of him.Thren left Little Ala Mhigo at the age of 17, taking with her a simple blade, determined to wrest a better life for her and Gentle Sunrise out of Ul'dah's hands by any means necessary.

Ticktox hails from Idyllshire, and learned of adventuring from those who came to the growing city. When the Vath founded their Adventurers’ Guild, she joined up at once, developing relationships with the Vath, the dragons, the hunters of Tailfeather, and the Coerthan knights. She took jobs that brought her closer and closer to Ishgard and, thus, the allied city-states.At last, having learned much (or so she thought) from the adventurers and others she came to know, Ticktox decided to set out for the city of Ul'dah to learn of the other Adventurers’ Guilds and to learn new and different clockwork techniques from the Goldsmiths’ Guild. Which doesn’t explain how she ended up punching ladybugs outside the city gates, but at least she has a plan…

However, the aether poisoning was able to be mostly reversed, leaving her of sound mind if very different than the person she'd been prior to the attack. Alisaie told Shadow of the traditions of the Source's galdjent, and Shadow decided to rename herself as these distant galdjent might, choosing a new name to suit the new person she'd become. The caravan’s owners were only too happy to offer her a mercenary contract of her own, and Tahla joined the ranks of the caravan's protectors alongside her mother. When the Garleans began to threaten Eorzea, it didn’t affect Tahla’s life very much at first; all that really happened was that the caravan route shifted a bit. She headed for Gridania on a chocobo-drawn wagon, never dreaming that she was about to begin the greatest adventure of her life.
a realm reborn
In Gridania, Tahla joined the Archer's Guild; having already possessed some fair measure of skill from her long training and service as a guardswoman, she was set to learn from the more advanced teachers, and invited as an apprentice to the Godsbow. She familiarized herself with the ways of Gridania, both the good and the bad (her Keeper heritage earning her a few raised eyebrows or worse at times). When hostilities with the Ixal grew more intense, the Wood Wailers and Order of the Twin Adder hired outside mercenaries - an unprecedented act, but one evidently approved of by the elementals, albeit very grudgingly. Tahla was sent to assess the marksmanship of said mercenaries, and journeyed to the Bannock - only to be struck dumb by one of said mercenaries, a young roegadyn woman named Glowing Ember.Glowing Ember (or "Em", as Tahla learned) was a lancer, and thus not one of the folk Tahla needed to interact with, but oh, how Tahla wanted to interact with her, and a good many other things besides. Em was a bit awkward, a bit reticent, but Tahla's attentions were not unwelcome, inasmuch as either of them had time to indulge them. And then the two of them found themselves fighting back-to-back beneath the Guardian Tree, their shared opponent a strangely cloaked magus. From that point on, the paths of their lives were inextricably entangled, as both were named emissaries of Gridania and sent forth into Eorzea. As they became comrades in arms, the thought of romance was set aside for a time - there were primals to lay low, schemes to untangle, places to visit (and flee). Still, the two of them became fast friends if nothing else.

Coco is supremely confident in her ability and her superiority. She’s loud and cheery 90% of the time. When she’s in a bad mood she turns surly and sarcastic. Coco expects the best of everything but also expects to have to take it from other people. She does have morals, but they revolve around her and the Sirens being at the top of the heap, with the considerations of ‘lesser’ beings mattering far less to her. Evil? No. Self-centered? Absolutely.Coco is capable of subtlety, even though she’s not inclined to it naturally. Rhoswen trained her well, and her supreme loyalty to her captain turns Rhoswen’s every order into a requirement. Coco is effectively incapable of betraying her crew or defying Rhoswen’s authority, though she’ll happily defy anyone and everyone else at Rhoswen’s request.

Cocorei was born in the Silver Bazaar in Thanalan. Her parents were merchant sailors, frequently away undertaking small-scale shipping operations. It was dangerous work, but profitable. To make up for their absences, they spoiled their only daughter greatly. Coco grew up a headstrong and demanding fireball of a child. At the age of eight, Coco began joining her parents on their sea voyages. Six months later, their vessel was raided by the Sanguine Sirens. Coco didn’t realize the seriousness of the pirate raid, and her first reaction was to snatch a tricorne hat from a fallen pirate and put it on her head, then jump up on a barrel with her play-sword and shout “YARRRRR!”.Captain Rhoswen was amused by Coco’s cocky fearlessness, and offered to take the little Lalafell with her. Coco thought this would be a grand game and agreed. The Sirens withdrew with Coco and all her parents’ cargo, leaving what remained of their crew (along with Coco’s parents) adrift in the Rhotano Sea.Coco thus grew up as a spoiled pirate ‘princess’, given the nickname “Klynkoenyb” (little queen) by the Lady Infernal’s crew. They encouraged her headstrong behavior, tempering it only with a stout loyalty to the Sirens, ensuring that Coco answered only to them.At the age of 17, Rhoswen sent Coco to the Maurauder’s Guild so the ‘princess’ could hone her skills and become ever so slightly respectable, with the goal of placing another loyal Siren into the ranks of the Maelstrom. It’s all a grand game to Coco, whose devotion to Rhoswen and the Sirens is unshakable.

Her travel pack is always stuffed fit to burst with memory-crystals, with the crystals themselves fit to burst with the tales, folklore, and legends of the people and places she's visited. Venat, in her time holding the seat of Azem, was surrounded by many souls. Among them, there were two that were said to shine brightest: that of her apprentices, Melete and Thaleia. They could almost always be found in their mentor's wake, traveling alongside her and taking part in her adventures. The trio were close as family, and when Venat decided to step down as Azem, there was much discussion over which of her proteges would inherit the Fourteenth Seat.As it turned out, the decision was easy - Thaleia recused herself as a candidate, claiming that Melete would be far better in the role. After Melete's ascension to become the Traveler in truth, Thaleia resumed her journeying at Azem's side. For a while, it seemed little had changed save the color of Melete's mask of office. And, in truth, little did, save that Thaleia and Azem grew closer still as they traveled together. The long friendship between the two soon blossomed into love, and the impish Storyteller became known as "the Sun's shadow", so close was she always following in her beloved's wake.

Iriska was born and raised in Lea Monde, a city in Dalmasca famed for its expansive vineyards and excellent wine. Young Iriska trained as a cooper (barrel-maker) and seemed primed to become an artisan. She was rarely spotted without a bit of wood in one paw, carving away with a small knife and her own claws to make tiny, intricate figurines. But when Iriska was twenty, the Garlean Empire invaded Dalmasca, subjugating the city and burning the vineyards to the ground. An underground resistance movement sprang up immediately, calling themselves Riskbreakers after a historical order of warriors, assassins, and spies. Iriska joined them without a second thought. So she was in the resistance. They resisted. It didn't go well, as evidenced by Lea Monde's continued occupation. That is all Iriska will divulge about a good two decades of her life.At the age of thirty-seven, Iriska abruptly left Lea Monde, with the city still firmly under the Empire's yoke. Her reasons for leaving are her own, jealously protected. At that time, Iriska began wandering the Three Great Continents, picking up odd jobs as an adventurer for hire. Her skill and discretion were immediately evident. To this day, Iriska is known as a canny, experienced adventurer who levies a high fee for her services - worth every gil, according to those who have hired her in the past.
